Financial crises, disastrous wars, moral decay—if the events of the past decade have taught us anything, it is that America needs political, economic, and cultural leaders who have better judgment, more wisdom, and higher ethics. We need leaders whose imagination and character have been shaped by a genuine humanities education, rather than the thoroughly politicized, amoral “humanities” that now dominate our academic and cultural institutions.
For too long, our increasingly inane and vulgar culture has been feeding only what is low within us. To change our course, we must fortify and train what is highest in our natures. That is what the National Humanities Institute does. We educate current and future teachers, professors, judges, lawyers, journalists, writers, and artists—people who influence the minds and imaginations of thousands of others.
